Karelia University of Applied Sciences has become a member of the City of Joensuu’s Climate Business Network.
Karelia UAS promotes responsibility and sustainable development as both an employer and a higher education community. The aim is to enhance ecological, economic, social, and cultural responsibility and well-being. Sustainable development initiatives are integrated into degree programs for students and continuous learning opportunities, as well as being a fundamental part of research, development, and innovation activities.
Jaana Tolkki, Director of Human Resources and Responsibility, emphasizes the importance of fostering responsibility and sustainable development among students, staff, and partners across various fields. She notes that even small actions can have significant impacts, highlighting the climate partnership as integral to their responsibility efforts, aiming to make all activities more climate-friendly.
Karelia is committed to the following measures and goals:
- We promote Joensuu city’s carbon neutrality goal
- We will create a climate program for Karelia UAS as a thesis project during 2025
- We will highlight SDG goals in the organization’s programs and plans by the end of 2025
- We will develop our responsibility reporting according to the recommendations of Arene and the joint sustainability reporting model of universities of applied sciences, with the reporting model ready by 2026
- We will implement electronic transactions and archiving
- We will monitor the progress of measures and communicate our achievements to climate partners and other stakeholders.
Petri Raivo, President of Karelia University of Applied Sciences, formally signed the climate commitment on February 28, 2025.
